Chapter Eighteen

“You did?” Lightheaded from relief and braced for further impact, I squinted up at him. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

He shrugged. Batman actually shrugged. “I didn’t think it was that big a deal. A freaky coincidence.”

“I don’t believe in coincidences.” Fate, all along I’d thought it was fated, that we were meant to be together because he did for me what no sub ever had, made me crave more of him.

Duran tipped my chin up, studied my face. “This is really a big deal to you, isn’t it? I’m sorry, I didn’t think it would be. You acted so nonchalant when I was there and then vanished at the end of the sessions. I just thought you didn’t want to talk about what happened in there. And I sure didn’t.”

All that anxiety over nothing. I couldn’t have felt like a bigger flaming idiot if I lit myself on fire. “How long have you known?”

“I saw your car in the parking lot. At first, I thought you were there as a sub, but then when you came to the door in that outfit and the reporter was lurking outside, everything just sort of happened.”

My car. Of course a man would notice a detail like my car, something I wouldn’t even consider. “And here I was stressing out that you didn’t know and that you’d hate me when you found out.” So unbelievably stupid. To compound my humiliation, tears stung my eyes but I fought the urge to cry.

“Hey, Daisy, look at me.” Duran tipped my chin up, forcing me to meet his golden gaze. “It’s okay. It’s happened and now it’s over. We can put it behind us with a clean slate, move on from here.”

“What?” I really must’ve been stupid because I didn’t understand what he meant.

“I got what I needed from the experience and while I’m grateful for it, for you, it’s over now.”

“Oh,” Well, that explained why he hadn’t showed up tonight. “Just like that, you can give it up?”

Duran led me back over to the couch, pulled me down onto his lap. “You have to understand, babe, when I first went there, I didn’t know what exactly I was looking for. Just something different to make me feel alive again. And in a way it worked, but it wasn’t about being dominated by a sultry minx, no matter how tempting. I had to work through my fear. And I did, so I’m good now.”

“Okay,” I drew the word out, considering what he said. “So, if I hadn’t been Catwoman would you have told me about going to Madame Minerva’s?”

He blew out a sigh. I gave him points for not hastening to reassure me he would have, thinking that was what I wanted to hear. Duran always told me the truth, no matter how unpleasant. “I’m not sure. Would you have told me about Catwoman if I hadn’t shown up there?”

I nodded. “Eventually. I never want to lie to you, Duran.”

“That’s my girl.” His lips brushed against mine.
